False Face
The former practice when carving a mask was to do so in a live basswood tree. After roughing it out, it was split off and taken home for finishing. If the tree survived the removal it was a sign that the mask would be an especially good healer as it taken on some of the spiritual power of that strong tree.
The Eagle
This a beautiful Iroquois Symbol featuring the eagle. Native people lived in a spiritual harmony with the natural world. They believed everything possessed a soul or spirit and that they were given a special purpose by the Great Spirit. The eagle is a very sacred entity for it flies closest to the Creator and carries our thoughts and prayers to the Skyworld upon it’s wings. To the Iroquois it is known as the Guardian Eagle for it sits atop the Great Tree of Life watching over the people and the mother earth with its powerful sight. The eagle screams warning to indicate that danger is near. One must always listen to the sound of the eagle in our own lives. It is considered to be the great protector of the people. It is believed that when we come to maturity, and begin to see the fullness of our dreams, that we have actually received the sacred faether from the Great Creator. This allows us to, in turn, give back the qualities of the great eagle which live within ourselves-vision, compassion, nurturing, protection. The eagle is considered to be the true protector of the people-in both the physical and spiritual sense-for the eagle protects our future, our dreams, our passions.
